24 days of wonder (3): The Universe in a drop of water

Stuck at home in the snow for the last couple of days I’ve been feeling cooped up and frustrated but sitting down quietly for a few minutes I noticed these drops of water on the tiled floor by the back door – perhaps melted snow brought in on foot.

There seems to be salt forming a crystal crust and some kind of oil that refracts the light into different colours when caught at the right angle in the sunlight.

They remind me of galactic nebulae out in space or the strange surface of a distant planet.
